“I’ve Heard Bad Things About X Company”

“I’ve Heard Bad Things About X Company…”

A statement I hear often, and one that too often closes the door on opportunity.
To be honest, it’s a bit lazy and a little naive.

When someone says this, what they usually mean is that they’ve heard a story, maybe from a friend, an ex-colleague, or even a quick online comment. And that story then becomes fact in their mind.
But recruitment isn’t that black and white. Every recruiter, every manager, every team, and every experience is different.

The truth is, situations are always dynamic, fluid, and unique. Just because someone you know didn’t have a great experience at Company X doesn’t mean you’ll have the same. Circumstances change, managers develop, and cultures evolve. What was once a challenge might now be a real success story.

Especially when we’re talking about independently owned firms that have stood the test of time, those with genuine longevity and consistent success. There’s usually a reason for that, and it’s worth looking deeper before writing them off based on someone else’s experience.

Why Hypha takes a different approach

At Hypha, we don’t work with companies we don’t like. It’s that simple.
If a client treats us poorly, why would we want to represent them to talented recruiters? It wouldn’t make sense, and it certainly wouldn’t be authentic.

The relationships we build with our clients are based on trust, transparency, and mutual respect. We get to know the leadership teams, we ask the right questions, and we pay attention to how they communicate and follow through. We’ve made several successful placements into most of our clients, and because we know both sides so well, we can match personalities and working styles, not just CVs to job specs.

Often, the difference between a great experience and a bad one isn’t the company name, it’s the manager, the environment, and the timing. A brilliant recruiter with the right mindset and manager can thrive almost anywhere.

Don’t let someone else’s experience become your story

So, I’d ask you not to judge without exploring.
Speak to us, in confidence, about what you want from your next company, what you value, what motivates you, and what kind of leadership brings out your best.

We’ll tell you the truth about our clients, the good, the bad, and the ugly. Because every company has all three. Everyone makes mistakes, but it doesn’t mean they don’t learn from them and improve. I’ve certainly seen managers grow into their roles, evolve their leadership styles, and improve tenfold over time.

Good companies listen, reflect, and get better. And sometimes, the best opportunities are hiding behind outdated reputations or one-off experiences that no longer reflect reality.

The real question

So next time you catch yourself saying, “I’ve heard bad things about X company,”
stop and ask yourself, whose story are you believing?

Maybe it’s time to find out for yourself.
Because the right company, the right manager, and the right opportunity might just be the one you almost dismissed.

Talk to us at Hypha Recruit.
We’ll tell you the truth, not the rumours, and help you discover where you’ll truly thrive.
